The MSZ ISO/IEC 19970-1 standard describes internationally acknowledged processes based on industry practices, facilitating the efficient and secure performance of rather complicated software asset management activities affecting a number of professional fields such as corporate governance, informatics and finances. The standard is significant in that it renders the registration of installed software and licences, just as the handling of other related documents much more transparent and correct. On the one hand, by complying with the standard, companies will be able to verify, both outside and within their organization, that they perform their software asset management activities in compliance with statutory regulations. On the other hand, they will also save considerable sums via the more rational management of software.
The launch, as a Hungarian national standard, of the international standard issued two years ago is the result of a cooperation between the Hungarian Standards Institution (MSZT), BSA (Business Software Alliance) in Hungary and IPR-Insights Kft.. The Hungarian translation of the standard was prepared by IPR-Insights Kft. and the final text was completed on the basis of coordination talks held in the competent IT and technical committee of MSZT. BSA Hungary supported the issuance of the national standard as an initiative that facilitates the spreading of responsible software asset management among Hungarian institutions as well as at small, medium and large sized companies and that relates to activities aimed at restricting illegal software use.
The newly introduced standard assists the work of managers of Hungarian business ventures as well as leaders responsible for software management in that it reduces the legal and financial risks of their operation and also improves their competitiveness. This expectation is also confirmed by experiences that clearly indicate lower risks and improved competitiveness in countries applying this standard. A further advantage is that, from now on, software asset management systems can be certified by independent parties, which also adds to the operating security of companies abiding the law.
